"Armaments Engineering &
Technology Center - AETC.
The mission of the Armaments Engineering and Technology Center is to be a Center
of Excellence for Armament Systems and Munitions technologies and to create a
workforce with world class engineers and scientists who can transform
technologies and advanced concepts into weapon systems for the battlefield of
today and tomorrow.
AETC has the responsibility to generate a balance of armament technologies
investments, including evolutionary and most importantly "disruptive"
technologies, such as the Electromagnetic gun and Directed Energy Weapons using
multiple sources including in-house, industry, other government labs, academia
and foreign sources. Technology investment must be virtually continuous-weeding
and feeding.
A brief description of each Competency Directorate under AETC is as follows:
Weapon Systems and Technology: Responsible for generating technologies and
execution of life-cycle research, development, engineering, design,
producibility engineering, sustainment and national/international standardizing
programs related to weapons and weapon systems.
Energetics, Warheads, and Environmental Technology: Responsible for life cycle
research and engineering on all energetic materials, and components for munition
systems. This directorate is also responsible for research and development on
all warheads and their components.
Munitions Systems and Technology:
Responsible for performing life cycle
engineering for all munition systems to include tank artillery, mortar, small
and medium caliber rockets, shoulder fired and recoilless, demolition munitions
as well as vehicle protection systems.
Fuze and Precision Armaments Technology:
Responsible for providing fuze and precision core competency capability, life
cycle support for fuzing and fuze setting systems for army munitions and core
competency capability associated with the life cycle support of components and
component integration relevant to precision/smart gun fired munitions.
Fire Control Systems and Technology: Responsible for planning and executing
technology base and life cycle systems engineering for armament fire control
systems both hardware and software, sub-systems, and associated battlefield
digitization sub-systems including test, measurement and diagnostic equipment
and training devices.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal: Responsible for providing EOD functional support to
U.S. munitions developers. Also, it is responsible for developing EOD procedures
for safe disposal of U.S. and foreign conventional munitions.
These Competency Directorates are designed to consolidate personnel with
similar, synergistic talents or competencies under one management structure.
This consolidation promotes greater cross-fertilization of technologies and
therefore greater depth, making the organization more agile and responsive to
adjust to large program terminations or start-ups.
These Directorates are ultimately accountable for growing the capabilities of
the workforce and, through coordination with the Enterprise Management
organization and Armament Systems Integration Center, ensuring that use of the
AETC workforce is maximized through participation on Integrated Product Teams
and other work assignments to support the rapid and consistent maturation of
technologies and technology solutions.
AETC also has the responsibility for continuing modernization of facility assets
so that ARDEC remains a "state of the art" organization. New technologies or
advanced concepts generated by AETC will be coordinated with elements of the
Enterprise Management Office and together these ideas can be promoted to various
customer agencies for Army and Joint Service User interest and funding
resources.
In short, AETC will provide Soldiers with state-of-the-art weapon systems
through innovation and research. The most important asset of AETC will be its
world-class personnel. AETC will create a work atmosphere where employees
perform at their best within world-class facilities to create and integrate
technologies into weapon systems at a rapid pace to satisfy the needs of our
ultimate customer, the Soldier."
